Lake Clark Pass, Alaska

Coming Alive in the Wilderness       Summer 2010

This is the adventure of a lifetime!
We are leading a group of ten men on a trip to Turquoise Lake, in Lake Clark National Park, a remote jewel of the Alaskan parks system. It is a microcosm of Alaska that showcases its stunning beauty and its awe-inspiring mammals including grizzly, wolf, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, and wolverine.

We'll fly by float-plane to Turquoise Lake, our base-camp. Each day we'll set out on daily hikes across the roadless and trackless alpine tundra, taking in spectacular views of surrounding peaks, and crossing glacial streams. Your adventure will be supplemented by retreat activities led by Dr. Ira Orchin and Frank Henninger, designed to heighten your experience and create a strong cohesive community. Such activities will include tai chi, qi gong, meditation, journaling, and nightly circle. Most days you'll have private time to reflect and integrate your experience and to fish or kayak. Our guide service, Alaska Alpine Adventures, was selected by National Geographic as one of the "Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth for 2009." They are known for their upbeat spirit, their generosity in teaching outdoors skills, and their surprisingly delicious back-country meals.

This trip is similar to the AAA standard Turquoise Lake trip PLUS two extra nights (one in Anchorage and one on Turquoise Lake). And, we are including a short visit at Dick Proenneke's famous log cabin on Upper Twin Lake as we leave Turquoise Lake.

“It was the experience of a lifetime and I will be eternally grateful.”

Day 1
Meet in Anchorage, Alaska. Welcome and orientation dinner.

Days 2
Optional morning visit to the Anchorage Museum to get an overview of the history, peoples, and art of Alaska. We take an early afternoon bush flight above hanging glaciers, wild and scenic rivers, and active volcanoes through Lake Clark pass into Port Alsworth. From there we fly by floatplane to Turquoise Lake deep in the roadless and trackless interior of the park where we will make our basecamp in a spectacular alpine setting.

We'll set up along the shore of the lake, and position our tent doors to frame the views. The midnight sun affords us plenty of time to get settled.

Day 3-8
Turquoise Lake is the heart and soul of Lake Clark National Park. Nestled in a stunning amphitheater beneath 6,000 foot walls of rock and ice, our base camp at this glacial lake offers some of Alaska's best hiking, wildlife viewing and fishing. We have 6 full days to choose hikes that best suit our desires :crossing the mighty Mulchatna and exploring the country to the north, making an ascent of 5500 foot crag peak, or setting out early for the Sheep Lick , a mineral lick where sheep have been known to congregate in groups of 20 to 30. Our guides know the country well, and will be happy to suggest hikes to their favorite locations.

Most days you'll have private time on your own to kayak or fish or to just sit back,Êtake in the grandeur of the setting and integrate your experience. Each day we'll have retreat activities such as meditation, tai chi, qi gong, and journaling to heighten your experience. Each night we'll circle up to help you make meaning of your experience and to create a strong cohesive community.

On our last night, we'll review our adventures and what we've learned and solidify our plans for bringing the "fire" home from the mountains.

Day 9

The float plane arrives to pick us up. On the way back to Port Alsworth we make a stop at Twin Lakes to visit the hand-hewn log home of Dick Proenneke, a man who ,until his departure in 1998, lived a 30 year dream as the only full time resident of the area.

Please schedule flights home from Anchorage after 9 pm.
